1. Interface Overview

Overview screen

Important notes for screen reader users:

  1. Use Ctrl+Tab or F6 to move between different panes. Use Tab to navigate through the options within a pane.

  2. JAWS users: You may notice that JAWS doesn’t speaking while navigating after switching back to the SM Readmate app from another application. If this happens, press Alt to open the menu bar, then press Escape to close it.

2.1 Adding Books

Supported formats: EPUB, DAISY, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, TXT.

2.1.1Add books stored on your device:

- Select the Book import (+) button on the main screen, or press Ctrl+o.

- Browse to the book file location.

- Select Import to add it to the bookshelf.

2.1.2 Download books from online libraries:

- On the main screen, Select Book download button, or press Ctrl+l.

- Select a library (e.g., sách tiếp cận).

- Log in with your member account (if the required) → select OK to connect.

- Enter a title in the search box.

- From the results, select a book title for details.

- Select Download Book to add it to your bookshelf.

Note: Most libraries require a membership account. Please check the library’s website for more information.

2.2 Reading Books

- All added books appear in the Bookshelf. Select a book to open it.

- The book reading screen displays the book title at the top and some control buttons.

- The first time you press Play to have the book read aloud, the app will ask you to configure a reading voice. Or you can set it up via More (…) menu → Narrate.

- Select Play to start reading. Select again to pause.

navigation button Prev/next navigation Navigate the book using different units. You can move by paragraph, chapter, heading, page, and more. Set your preferred navigation unit from the More (…) menu → Navigation Unit. Alt+Right arrow / Alt+Left arrow
Menu button More (…) menu You can find menu items to manage notes, track reading progress, adjust text styles, change narration voice, and set the navigation unit.

- Select Search in Book on the top bar, or press Ctrl+f.

- Enter the text you want to find.

- Select a search result to go directly to that section.

2.4 Notes

2.4.1 Add Notes

- While reading, select the text you want to annotate → select Note. Or, press Ctrl+n.

- Choose note type: Highlight or Underline.

- Select a color → select Add to save.

- Repeat for other notes.

2.4.2 View Notes

- Select More (…) at the bottom right → select Notes to see all saved notes.

2.4.3 Delete Notes

- Press and hold a note to select (multiple selection supported).

- Select the Delete (trash bin) icon at the top right → confirm.

- Select Close to return to the book reading screen.

The screen allows deleting one or multiple notes.

- On the book reading screen, select Navigation (bottom left).

- Go to the Notes tab.

- Select the note to jump to its content.

3. Settings

3.1 General Overview

On the main screen, select the Settings tab located on the left frame

3.2 Narrate

3.2.1 TTS type:

You can choose System TTS or SAPI5; for each TTS type, you can select a corresponding voice.

Two voice types are supported: Voice for text (reads book content) and Voice for Format Voice (reads structural details).

- Select Change → select a supported language.

- Choose a TTS voice for that language.

- Long-press or press Test button to preview → Select Voice.

- Adjust volume, pitch, and speed (for TTS).

- Pre-recorded voices/audio support volume and speed.

3.2.2 Reading Options:

- Auto read aloud: Start narration automatically when opening a book.

- Read out elements format: Toggle announcing of headings, images, lists, tables, notes, etc.

3.2.3 Math Reading Settings:

- Speech language: Select TTS language for formulas.

- Speech style: Choose ClearSpeak or SimpleSpeak

- Speech verbosity: Terse, Medium, Verbose.

- Impairment: Blindness, Low Vision, or Learning disability.

- Chemistry: SpellOut (Character-by-character: H 2 O) or Off (Expression mode: H two sub O).

- Navigation verbosity: Terse, Medium, Verbose.

- Navigation mode: Enhanced, Simple, or Character.

4. Keystrokes

Below are the keyboard shortcuts for the different screens.

4.1 Anywhere
